For this project I made a clay vase using linoleum. The cabbage print was carved out of the linoleum. I wasn't really inspired by anything I just wanted to make a vase with flowers on it. I but this piece on pieces of cardboard that i weaved together and cut out cabbages and pasted them on the cardboard. I made flowers out of tissue paper and gold wire. And I also put the cabbage print on the tissue paper to create a different affect. I was not particularly inspired by anything specifically. I chose the paint for the clay because I like how it was spotted. I'm sure any othe paint with a single color other than cream white would have brought out the cabbage print but it is able to be seen better closer up. I intended on making a vase out of the clay to use for flowers. So that is why I decided to make the flowers out of tissue paper.
Midterm
For my art midterm I created a series of posters. I wanted to address the issues of stereotypes in America and how they can lead to ignorance and blindness towards the truth about someone or some one's culture. I used colored pencils and markers on white paper. I wanted to create a simple picture so that the focus was on the message. The three posters directly below were targeted at a certain type of person. The first picture represents a Muslim women who is surrounded by many stereotypes but the truth is in the yellow circle behind her head. She still is an American and someone who wants peace no matter what people may think. The picture to the right of is of an African American girl who is surrounded by the stereotype that she is a below or not worthy of certain things. The phrase that I used reflects how many people do not want to forget that many of the African Americans' ancestors were once slaves so this entitles that African Americans today are in some way unequal. I wanted to show how no matter how much people will bring up what her ancestry holds she will rewrite her own history. And the third poster to the rights reflects someone of Mexican decent who receives many stereotypes because of their ancestry. Many people have the notion that Mexicans are all illegal immigrants or are only necessary for cheap labor. Mexicans are more than that and are never all the same. The last poster (going in order) represents a Native American and how many people use there traditions and highly respected attire and head dresses as regular attire. Native Americas were on America first and they take their culture and traditions very seriously. And lastly the third poster I wanted to express the at times overall feeling in America. Even though we see the things on the television like the cries for help, the protests, and the inequality we still chose to put it behind a curtain and ignore what is really going on. We choose to instead pay attention to what is happen believe what other people say or what is the notion about a group of people. If we open our eyes we will be able to see that these stereotypes are incorrect. No two people are alike so why hold someone to something that is generalized and said to be true just because it is a stereotype.
My Art Final
For my art final I decided to make a necklace out of clay. I enjoy making jewelry so for this assignment I wanted to try something different and use clay for the beads. I was inspired by the MFA from the jewelry that I saw there. There was actually a great lack of jewelry there especially modern jewelry at the museum so this inspired me also to make some sort of jewelry. Jewelry for me is a big art form. I love jewelry that can be conveyed as art and also can be worn.
Seeing the Impressionistic paintings at the MFA inspired me to use the mindless light brush stokes I used on each bead. I used acrylic paint on the beads. I used the colors that ranged from blue, purple, pink, white and the shades in-between. I used the elements of design by making my beads a different shape other than a sphere of cube to make it more appealing to the eye. The shape of the beads allows the necklace to have a 3D effect. Also by making the necklace balanced and symmetrical on both sides this followed the elements of design. I didn’t want to do a simple design on the beads and the reason I chose a mindless design was because jewelry is a kind of artwork that is judged (when worn) from a distance. When someone wears a necklace people look at it from a distance. This necklace as a kind of pop out effect when you look at it. Many necklaces look flat so to make this more appealing to an artist I made the beads thicker and 3-demetional. I made an eye charm to give the necklace a focal point and to give it an added detail. The eye represents a kind of always watching presence. As you wear the necklace and look at it the eye charm looks back at you. I think this gives the necklace some character.
If I had to change something about the necklace it would have been possibly the lack of detail in the piece. Details are important to an art piece so this may lack that in some aspects. If I had more time I also would have added a different shaped bead in between the beads to add even more depth to the piece. A small circle bead in between each current bead would give the necklace a fun pattern.

Museum of Fine Arts Reflection
At the MFA there were many eye catching piece of art work that made me stop and look but some more than others I really enjoyed. There was a piece of art work in which I don't know the name of the artist or the piece but it was in the contemporary artwork (Also could not find on the website). The artist used elements of art and principles of design by creating a focal point. Also how the proportions of the piece were balance and no part of the piece was over taking the other. This piece was really eye catching because when I walked by it I looked away then looked back at it. It was a self portrait of a man who had silver strings that ended with round jewels hanging form the piece out of his noise. This was very interesting because I made yo stop and think what was the reasoning behind the piece. According to the description on the side the Artist dabble in drugs like cocaine. When I discovered this explanation I found it very intriguing that the materials he used like silver and jewels where related to a topic like that. I liked how this showed that art has no limits and can be interpreted in many different ways. I also like the exhibition named "In the Wake" by the Japanese Photographers which showed pictures from the earthquake. Pictures like from the series "Rasen kaigan (Spiral Shore)" really grabbed my attention. The pictures were taken in 2012, chromogenic print by the artist Lieko Shiga. These pictures had many shades of bright reds, blues, and greens all found in nature. The colors were so rich and bright and it was so amazing that pictures were taken in the mist of something so disastrous. The artist used elements of art and principles of design by creating focal piece and many of the photos. Some focal points were people. The pictures were well balances and simple. These pieces inspire my final project because both of them hide a deeper hidden message. From the disaster pictures of the earthquake the beautiful pictures hide the ugliness of natural disasters. The self portrait of the artist hides his possible addiction with drugs by an at first innocent piece of artwork. I hope to achieve this in my art final piece. |
